Gypsy Wagons
Over the years I've made a number of interpetations of late 19th century English "Vardos". All detail work is done with handtools and all materials are marine-grade for beauty and longevity.

In 2010, I will be teaching at least two of the following three-day weekend seminars. For more information, check out www.ptwoodschool.com and click on the "Gypsy Wagon" button on the left hand side.  For more photos of my latest caravan project, you can visit the owner's website here.

Gypsy Wagon Design Seminar

In this three-day weekend workshop we will explore how the late 19th century, English-made “Living Wagons” (called “Vardos” by the Gypsies)—were designed, built and used. Then we will explore how modern design and construction techniques can be used to create a wagon that will be enchanting and cozy, yet roadworthy for travel at today’s highway speeds. In the balance of the seminar you will have a chance to consult with us as you design your wagon through concept sketches. If you already have a developed concept, you can work on finalizing working drawings so you can get down to wagon building on your return home!

Here's a sample of some of the topics we will be discussing:

  • Pros and cons of various chassis and running gear arrangements
  • Where does the door go—front or back?
  • Hard or soft (canvas) roof—the pros and the cons.
  • Plywood or mortise and tenon wood frame construction.
  • Which woods for which components.
  • How to bend hoops with a steam box and setting them to a form.
  • How to set up a form for laminating a roof beam to a curve.
  • Designing electrical and plumbing systems
  • Designing the enclosure and chimney for installing a wood-burning stove
  • Painting, caulking and varnishing techniques.
  • Outfitting a wagon for the road.
  • Towing techniques and concerns

Included in the cost of the course are detailed handouts and access to a free online forum where you can ask further questions and solicit advice.
